FACILITIES
Walker Science Building The Department of Geography and Geology is housed in Walker Science Building situated in the center of campus. Inside Walker Science we have classrooms with complete computer presentation capabilities, instructional and computer labs, a biogeography lab and research area, a sedimentology lab, a soil science, stratigraphy, and geomorphology lab, and conference rooms. Walker Science is serviced by "Eagle Air," which provides wireless high-speed Internet connections throughout the building. Our labs are open to all majors and faculty for class and research needs. Our geospatial applications lab offers seven networked workstations, reflected and transparency scanners, plotters, digitizers, and light tables. All workstations offer the latest software applications for GIS and remote sensing projects. In addition to our geospatial applications lab, the Geography and Geology Department also houses one of the university's most modern student computer labs with 25 computers. The lab's computers run a full suite of geographical, engineering, and statistical software applications. The department also has Trimble GPS receivers, a zoom transfer scope, two departmental libraries with more than 1000 books and journals, an extensive well log collection focused upon the Gulf Coastal region, and a map and imagery library.

The Department of Geography and Geology on the Gulf Coast offers BS degrees in Geography, Geographic Information Technologies (GIT), and Geology with a wide range of interests met. We offer field trips to (1) the southwest to study ancient native cultures, (2) throughout Mississippi to study the history and culture that defines the state, (3) Honduras to study the country from coral reefs to cloud forests to village structure to the tourists industry, and (4) our own backyards to learn hands-on field techniques. Our geography program covers world regions and how the earth operates from hurricane formation and prediction to geomorphology. The Southern Miss Gulf Coast Research Lab is located in Ocean Springs and is home to the Department of Coastal Science and more than 200 GCRL research staff. Geography and Geology faculty work with colleagues at GCRL, especially with their Gulf Coast Geospatial Center which is located at the GCRL. Collaboratives focus upon coastal land use, tidal habitats, barrier islands, coastal biogeography, hurricane impacts, and coastal restoration. The Department of Geography and Geology offers a Geography Master of Science degree in Geospatial Applications and a PhD in Geography at NASA's Stennis Space Center. Stennis is located about 60 miles south of Hattiesburg. Students can study introductory and advanced GIS technology and they can also concentrate in remote sensing and advanced image interpretation. Please contact the Department for more information concerning degree opportunities at Stennis. At Stennis, USM has a complete geospatial applications lab and a 3-D visualization center. The Geography Department conducts several research projects at Stennis, as well as product development and application. Technology employers at Stennis include: NASA, Locheed/Martin, Veridian, NAVO, Aerotec, Radiance, Air-O-Space, GeoDigital Mapping, GeoTek, PixSell, Space Imaging, Northrop Grumman, and more than forty private companies specializing in geospatial applications. For information on graduate opportunities and research at Stennis, please contact: George Raber, Ph.D.
Cook Library, located on the Hattiesburg campus, contains the principal collections of books, periodicals, microforms, government documents and other materials which directly support the instructional programs of The University of Southern Mississippi at all levels. McCain Library & Archives is located between Cook Library and the USM Museum of Art and houses the Special Collections. Research Services are directed from the Cleanth Brooks Reading Room, located in room 305 of McCain. Due to the rareness and historical value of documents in the Special Collections their access is restricted. Please contact McCain Library & Archives for further information: http://www.lib.usm.edu/spcol The Gulf Coast Library, located on the USM Long Beach campus, is part of the University Libraries serving the Gulf Coast campuses (Gulf Park, Keesler, and Jackson County campuses). The library is located in the heart of the Gulf Park campus at 730 East Beach Blvd. (off Hwy. 90) in Long Beach, Mississippi. The Gunter Library is located in the Richard L. Caylor Building at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL), Ocean Springs, MS campus. The Library contains abstracts and reprints, books, scientific journals, expedition reports, dissertations, and reference works that support research, education, and service in the marine sciences.
